What is wine?
Fermented grape juice! Grapes are harvested when ripe, crushed, and the remaining juice is fermented with yeast. This fermentation converts the sugar into alcohol and carbon dioxide, transforming grape juice into wine.
Why is more wine being produced in the UK?
The warmer climate allows better grapes to be grown here in the UK. Red grapes need warmer conditions to ripen properly. UK produced wines are becoming more popular and have even started to compete with the more traditional European wines.
How is sparkling wine made?
BUBBLES…
Still wine is carbonated to make sparkling wine. Cheaper wine is made in the same way as fizzy drinks. Generally, big pressurised tanks are used to store the wine and a second fermentation process takes place when sugar and yeast are added to create carbon dioxide (aka, bubbles). When Champagne is made – this second fermentation process happens in the bottle it is sold in!
Fun wine facts...
Sparkling wine was know as ‘party wine’. This could be to do with the fact that bubbles make alcohol enter the blood stream faster!
The temperature the wine is served at can affect it’s taste.
Champagne bottles are made from thicker glass to withstand the pressure created by carbination.
A 75cl bottle of wine contains the juice of 600 to 800 grapes!
White wine gets a deeper colour with age, red wine gets a paler colour with age.
Wine is best stored away from direct light and heat.
Swirling a glass of wine before tasting it helps release it’s aromas. A flute shaped glass with the edge pointing inwards is best as it captures these aromas.
